Lyrics

Translation (rhymed English translation)

Montenegro, hear the call, Jesus is your all in all
From the grave He rose for you, gave His throne, His promise true
Montenegro, heed this voice, make the Lord your only choice
He has conquered d eath's dark night, offers you eternal light

Open your eyes to His grace, let His love your sins erase
Death defeated, life restored, eternal path by Christ outpoured
He arose to set you free, from sin's chains He'll give release
New life offered, forever near, His companionship to cheer

From evil's grasp He'll break you free, to light and truth He'll guide with glee
Montenegro, surrender now, before His throne in reverence bow
Hear, dear land, this urgent plea, repent with all sincerity
On your knees, with humble heart, let a new life in you start

Not for fame or festive days, give your heart, let it amaze
Bow before your King divine, let Him rule this life of thine
Know the glorious day draws near, when our Lord shall reappear
Risen, living eternally, His judgment just and fair shall be

He'll come to judge with perfect right, each deed exposed before His sight
So people, wait not, time is now, to God Almighty humbly bow
Now's the time of grace divine, while God's love does brightly shine
Time for change, for salvation's call, transform your life, give Christ your all

Turn to Him with all your heart, not just in part, but every start
To your God, make your return, His child you'll be, this truth discern

Montenegro, hear the voice, Jesus is your saving choice
From the grave He rose for thee, showed the path to eternity

Montenegro: A Land of Green Mountains, Adriatic Sea, and Spiritual Heritage

Montenegro, a small Balkan country known for its stunning Adriatic coastline, rugged mountains, and historic towns, has a rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Its name means "Black Mountain" in Italian. Montenegro’s dramatic landscapes and ancient fortresses reflect a history marked by resilience and independence.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Montenegro was unique in Europe as a theocratic principality led by Orthodox bishops, or "Prince-Bishops." This form of governance emerged as the country faced threats from the Ottoman Empire. The Prince-Bishops, known as the "Vladikas," combined religious and political authority, guiding the Montenegrin people in faith and defense of their land. This theocratic system strengthened the nation's identity, uniting the people under a shared Orthodox Christian heritage and resisting foreign rule.

During the same period, Protestant communities, which had started to take root in certain Balkan areas due to the Reformation, faced severe persecution. Protestants were effectively expelled from most Balkans by the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Catholic Habsburg monarchy actively opposed the spread of Protestantism as part of the Counter-Reformation. At the same time, the Ottoman Empire, which controlled much of the region, did not grant Protestants the same tolerance it extended to Orthodox and Catholic communities. As a result, Protestantism left only a minimal presence on the peninsula.

Montenegro’s theocratic era ended in the 19th century when secular rulers took over, but the legacy of the Vladikas remains an essential part of Montenegrin history. Today, Montenegro is a secular republic, yet its Orthodox Christian roots and the legacy of its theocratic past continue to shape its national identity and cultural values.

Protestant missionaries returned to Montenegro only about 30 years ago after a long absence, and today, they are praying for a spiritual awakening in the country.
